In an era of choices, creating community by sending our girls to our neighborhood school

Carthay Center Elementary School is located in the heart of mid-town Los Angeles. The beautiful building was built in 1924 when the nearby Carthay Circle Theater was a popular place for movie premiers, including Gone With the Wind and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.   Unlike the theater, the school has survived. Beginning in Fall 2014, Carthay Center Elementary School will become the Carthay Environmental Studies Magnet. In this blog, I share my experiences as a parent of two children at this wonderful school. We got involved in Carthay while pregnant with our first child in 2003 and now send both of our kids there.
